1. Stocks soared at the open on the first trading day of the New Year after a manufacturing report from China lifted optimism about the global economy.
Alcoa and BofA led the Dow 30 gainers, while P&G was the only stock trading lower.

2. Stocks kicked off the first trading day of the New Year with a bang, adding to sharp gains following better-than-expected manufacturing and construction reports.

All S&P sectors were trading higher, except utilities. 

3. tocks eased off their highs in the final minutes of trading, but still finished the first trading day of 2012 with a bang, as Wall Street cheered a handful of better-than-expected economic reports from around the world.  
Alcoa led the blue-chip gainers, while McDonald’s slipped.
