It's day 2 of a crucial week of economic data.
First the scoreboard:
Dow: 13,008, -64.3, -0.4%

S&P 500: 1,379, -5.9, -0.4%

NASDAQ: 2,939, -6.3, -0.2%

And now the top stories:

  • According to the latest Case-Shiller index data, home prices climbed 0.91 percent in May. This exceeded the 0.5 percent increase that economists were looking for.  "We have observed two consecutive months of increasing home prices and overall improvements in monthly and annual returns; however, we need to remember that spring and early summer are seasonally strong buying months," wrote S&P's David Blitzer.  Nevertheless, prices were only down 0.66 percent year-over-year, and they could soon start showing year-over-year gains.

  • The June income and spending numbers were essentially inline with expectations.  Personal income climbed 0.5 percent while spending was flat at 0 percent.  Economists were looking for gains of 0.4 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.

  • The Chicago purchasing manager's index (PMI) unexpectedly climbed to 53.7 from 52.9 last month.  This was better than the 52.5 economists were looking for.  Hopefully, this is a good sign for the slew of global PMI numbers we will be getting from the major countries around the world.

  • One of the major conversations today came from PIMCO bond king Bill Gross, whose latest letter bashed stocks.  His major argument was that it did not seem economically sound that stocks could generate over 6 percent in real returns in the long-term, while long-term GDP growth is closer to 3.5 percent. Gross specifically called out the work of legendary finance professor Jeremy Siegel, author of Stocks For The Long Run, one of the most important finance books ever written.

  • Siegel wasn't having that.  "You definitely can have a return greater than GDP growth. There is nothing uneconomic about it," he said in a CNBC appearance today. "The thing is that capital gives out dividends, it gives out interest, it gives out return. When you add that all together, it's going to be greater than GDP growth. Even in a non-growing economy, you have situations where return is greater than GDP growth."  It would appear that Gross has made some very basic errors in his argument.

  • Like we said earlier, tonight is a big night for economic data.  All of the major countries will be releasing their manufacturing PMI numbers, which will give us an intimate look at the health of the economies around the world.

10 Things You Need To Know Before The Opening Bell

Good morning. Here's what you need to know.

  • Asian markets were mostly higher in overnight trading but the Shanghai Composite ended down 0.30 percent falling to its lowest in over three-years. Europe is mixed and U.S. futures are modestly higher.

  • Euro area unemployment was at a record 11.2 percent in June. The region's debt crisis and economic slowdown pushed companies to layoff workers.

  • The Federal Open Market Committee begins its meeting today and all eyes are on whether the Fed will announce QE3. Consensus is that for the moment, the Fed will only extend low rates to 2015.

  • In earnings news, Pfizer reported adjusted earnings of $0.62 per share, beating expectations of $0.54. Meanwhile, UBS announced a 58 percent decline in second quarter  profits and the bank said Nasdaq's mishandling  of the Facebook IPO cost it $356 million

  • Personal income and outlays for June will be out 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by S&P Case-Shiller for May at 9 a.m. ET. Consensus is for a 0.4 percent month-over-month increase in personal income and a 0.5 percent increase in the Case-Shiller 20-city home price index.

  • Chicago PMI for July will be released at 9:45 am ET, followed by consumer confidence for July at 10 a.m. ET. Consensus is for the business barometer index to decline to 52.5, and for consumer confidence to decline to 61.5.

  • India's northern and eastern regions were impacted by power failure for a second straight day which left 600 million without electricity. Yesterday's power outage impacted 370 million people.

Half Of India Plunged Into Darkness

For the second day in a row, India has suffered a gigantic power outage.
This time it was bigger, as half the country has lost electricity.
Here's a video from IBN explaining

Bandar Raya Developments May Rise On Potential Buyout

31 Jul 2012

Bandar Raya Developments (1473.KU) may rise towards MYR2.90 on news of a potential buyout offer from its substantial shareholder Ambang Sehati.

The company said late Monday that Ambang Sehati is finalizing financing, including procuring the necessary approvals for the funding for a potential takeover offer of voting shares and warrants in BRDB not already owned by it.

The indicative price is MYR2.90 per voting share and MYR1.80 for each warrant, the company said in a statement to the Malaysian stock exchange.

"The indicative price of RM2.90 per voting share is based on the estimated diluted net tangible assets per share in BRDB," it said. Ambang Sehati holds about 92.1 million shares, equivalent to about 18.8% in BRDB, according to its 2011 annual report. The stock ended Monday up 0.8% at MYR2.53

STOCKS GO NOWHERE: Here's What You Need To Know

Fencing Olympics
NBC Sports
It was a pretty uneventful day to kick off a very exciting week.
First the scoreboard:
Dow: 13,073, -2.6, -0.0%

S&P 500: 1,385, -0.6, -0.0%

NASDAQ: 2,945, -12.2, -0.4%

And now the top stories:

  • This will be an extremely busy week for economic data. On Tuesday, we hear about U.S. personal income, consumer sentiment and housing prices. From Tuesday through Wednesday, we will get the purchasing managers index reports from all of the major economies around the world.  On Wednesday and Thursday, the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, and the European Central Bank all publish their interest rate announcements.  And Friday, we get the big U.S. non-farm payrolls report.

  • But today was rather uneventful, and markets didn't really do much.

  • The June Dallas Fed Manufacturing survey was a huge miss.  The index plummeted to -13.2 from 5.8 a month ago.  However, it's worth noting that employment growth continued in July.

  • Warm weather sent natural gas prices surging today as consumers burn more energy to keep their homes cool.  Prices jumped over 5 percent.

  • Heat also sent corn prices higher again.  As the midwest drought continues to devastate farms, traders are increasing their bets that crop yields will continue to fall.

  • Markets have shown remarkable resilience in light of all of this uncertainty.  According to analysts surveyed by FactSet, in Q3 corporate profits will fall for the first time in 11 quarters.  Yet, according to the options market, investors aren't scared at all.

  • Morgan Stanley's Adam Parker, one of the more bearish strategists on Wall Street, is struggling to explain why the S&P 500 hasn't moved closer toward his year-end target of 1,167.  "Where could we be wrong?" he asks rhetorically in a new note to clients.  One bullish catalyst to the markets would be corporate cash coming off of the sidelines, which could happen if Mitt Romney were elected president, writes Parker.

10 Things You Need To Know Before The Opening Bell

Good morning. Here's what you need to know.

  • Asian markets were mostly higher in overnight trading but the Shanghai Composite fell 0.89 percent to its lowest level since March 2009. Europe is still rallying after comments from ECB head Mario Draghi last week and U.S. futures are flat.

  • Italian borrowing costs fell at an auction of five-year and 10-year debt on expectations that the European Central Bank would buy bonds. Italy sold €4.73 billion of bonds, and yields on 10-year bonds declined to 5.96 percent.

Citi's Fitzpatrick Sees Gold At $2,400 By Year-End

27,July, 2012

In an interview with King World News, Tom Fitzpatrick of Citigroup charted the 2005-2007 gold chart and compared it to the 2010-2012 chart. The correlation between the two is strikingly similar, and the next move was a huge jump up.
fitzpatrick gold
Fitzpatrick claims that if gold clears $1,791 the short-term target would then be between $2,050 and $2,060. After that bump, he "then expects a continuation on gold up to the $2,400 area by the end of the year or beginning of next year."

10 Things You Need To Know Before The Opening Bell

Kristen Bell
Jason Merritt/Getty Image
Good morning. Here's what you need to know.

  • Markets in Asia rallied in overnight trade, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng up 2 percent. Shares in Europe are higher and U.S. futures point to a positive open.

  • The European Central Bank is preparing to restart purchases of Italian and Spanish bonds and is readying "concerted action" with EU states, Le Monde reports. Meanwhile, Germany's Bundesbank says it opposes giving Europe's future bailout fund, the ESM, a banking license. Without a banking license, the ESM would have limited lending power.

  • Facebook beat Wall Street's light forecasts, but its stock hit fresh lows as investors sold off shares. Revenue was slightly above estimates, at $1.18 billion as the social network hit 955 million active monthly users. Zuckerberg: It wouldn't make sense for us to make a phone.
  • Amazon missed earnings expectations yesterday and said it would report a loss between $50 million and $350 million in the third quarter. The company recorded earnings per share of $0.01 on sales of $12.8 billion this quarter, below estimates.

  • U.S. economic announcements kick off at 8:30 a.m. with the second quarter GDP report. Consensus is for the economy to grow 1.4 percent during the period. At 9:55 a.m., the July U. Michigan Consumer Confidence reading is expected. Forecasts are for no change in the final July reading, remaining at 72.0.

  • Earnings on tap today include Merck and Chevron. Already, the pharmaceutical giant beat expectations, earning $1.05 a share. Chevron is expected to post earnings of $3.22 a share.
