All eyes will be on China tonight..
Here's what you need to know.
  • At 10:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, HSBC reports its China Flash Manufacturing PMI numbers. The prior reading on the index was 49.3, indicating a slight contraction in manufacturing.
  • At 2:00 a.m. Thursday, Germany reports GDP, which economists expect grew at 0.3 percent annualized rate in the second quarter.
  • At 3:00 a.m. France reports its PMI numbers, and economists are looking for a 43.7 reading on the manufacturing index and a 50 reading on services.
  • Then, at 3:30 a.m., it's back to Germany, which also reports PMIs. Economists are expecting a 43.4 reading on manufacturing and a 50.1 reading on services.
  • The eurozone reports composite PMI at 4:00 a.m., and economists forecast a 46.5 reading on the index – 44.2 for manufacturing and 47.7 for services.
  • Brazil reports unemployment at 8:00 a.m. and economists expect a 5.8 percent unemployment rate.
  • At 8:30 a.m., the U.S. data starts coming in, with initial jobless claims kicking things off. Economists expect 365k new claims, down slightly from 366k last week.
  • At 8:58 a.m. Markit reports U.S. preliminary PMI. A reading of 51.5 on the index is expected.
  • At 10:00 a.m. U.S. new home sales and the House Price Index are released, with economists expecting 365k new units sold in July and an annualized 2.6 percent rise in prices in the second quarter.

There are few major announcements on Monday across North America, with attention squarely on Europe and Asia. 
Here's what you need to know.
  • The U.K. starts things off at 7:01 p.m. on Sunday evening with the Rightmove Housing Price Index. There is no consensus for the August report.
  • Thai GDP follows at 10:30 p.m. with expectations for a 2.0 percent sequential advance. If that holds, it would represent a 3.1 percent year-on-year improvement.
  • Announcements go quiet until 1:00 a.m. on Monday morning, when new data from Japan's Coincident index will be released for June. The index last stood at 93.8 (June preliminary).
  • Russian retail sales and unemployment for July hit at 2:00 a.m. Sales are expected to gain 2.6 percent from a month earlier, as unemployment heads 10 basis points higher to 5.5 percent.
  • Dutch consumer confidence will be released at 3:30 a.m. Sentiment is expected to fall further, with forecasts for a 1 point drop to -33. 
  • Eurozone construction data follows at 5:00 a.m. 
  • Attention shifts to the U.S. at 8:30 a.m. with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's National Activity Index. There is no consensus for the report.

Here Are The Big Market Moving Events For Friday, August 17



Releases scheduled Friday look set to send investors sailing into the weekend without too much extra to worry about.
Here's what you need to know.
  • Germany reports producer prices at 2:00 a.m. ET. Economists are expecting a 0.3 percent increase from last month and a 1.2 percent increase year-over-year.
  • At 8:30 a.m. the Bank of Canada reports CPI numbers – economists expect a reading of 121.7, or a 0.2 percent increase from last month and a 2.0 percent increase from last year.
  • The big number of the day is at 9:55 a.m. – University of Michigan Consumer Confidence. Economists expect a slight downtick on the index to 72.2 from 72.3 last month.
  • Five minutes later, at 10:00 a.m., the US Leading Indicators index is released, and economists are forecasting a 0.2 percent increase from last month.
  • At 10:30 a.m., Venezuela announces Q2 GDP, with economists looking for 6.1 percent growth from last year.

Thursday is jobs day in the U.S. and earnings season maintains its momentum, with key reports out of AIGGM, and LinkedIn. 
Here's what you need to know.
  • Spain starts things off at 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning with a reading of its unemployment rate. There is no consensus estimate for the July report.

  • Swiss retail sales and PMI follow at 3:15 and 3:30 a.m., respectively. The PMI manufacturing headline number is expected to drop to 47 in July from 48.1 a month earlier.

  • Norwegian unemployment hits at 4:00 a.m. Expectations are for no change in the jobless rate, remaining at 3.0 percent in May.  

  • U.K. construction PMI will be released at 4:30 a.m. Economists forecast a slight uptick to 48.7 in July.

  • Eurozone producer prices follow at 5:00 a.m., with forecasts for a 0.4 percent sequential dip in June. 

  • The Bank of England will announce any monetary policy changes at 7:00 a.m., however consensus is for no change to the benchmark interest rate (at 0.50 percent) or asset purchasing program (at £375 billion).

  • The European Central Bank follows with its benchmark lending rate at 7:45 a.m. Economists project the rate will remain unchanged, at 0.75 percent.

  • Attention shifts to the U.S. at 8:30 a.m. with initial jobless claims, which are seen increasing to 370,000 during the week ending July 28.

  • The ISM-New York report will be released at 9:45 a.m.

  • U.S. factory orders close out the day at 10 a.m. Forecasts are for a 0.5 percent gain in June.
