America Is Very Close To Losing Its Place In The World As #1

top global economies
Deutsche Bank
The U.S. economy is the largest economy in the world.
However, it wasn’t always the largest.
And it’s unlikely to remain the largest economy for much longer.
The chart above comes to us via Deutsche Bank’s Jim Reid.
“As Alexander, Rome and Britain fell from their positions of absolute global dominance, so too has the US begun to slip,” Reid writes. “America’s global economic dominance has been declining since 1998, well before the Global Financial Crisis. A large part of this decline has actually had little to do with the actions of the US but rather with the unraveling of a century’s long economic anomaly. China has begun to return to the position in the global economy it occupied for millenia before the industrial revolution.”
One look at the chart, and it’s pretty clear that it may not be very long before we start saying the U.S. is number 2.
“Based on current trends China’s economy will overtake America’s in purchasing power terms within the next few years,” Reid continued. “The US is now no longer the world’s sole economic superpower and indeed its share of world output (on a PPP basis) has slipped below the 20% level which we have seen was a useful sign historically of a single dominant economic superpower. In economic terms we already live in a bi- polar world. Between them the US and China today control over a third of world output (on a PPP basis).”
Reid offered this prescient quote from Napoleon Bonaparte: ““Let China sleep, for when she awakes, she will shake the world.”

PETER SCHIFF: America Will Be On The Gold Standard Within 2 Years

Euro Pacific Capital's Peter Schiff is one of the most vocal critics of the Federal Reserve and its efforts to stimulate the economy with easy monetary policy.
In a new interview with King World News, Schiff argues that these efforts are fueling a phony recovery and that eventually this will end in a currency crisis.
And he believes we will go down this path no matter who becomes the next president.
From King World News:
...But eventually we will be back on a gold standard, not because politicians want it, but because the public demands it and the situation requires it.
We are headed for a currency crisis, and the only way we’re going to stop it is by putting real value back into the paper dollar.  So we have to tie it to gold.  In fact, if you are listening to the Republican Convention and realizing that, despite the talk, they are committed not to cut anything of substance.
They want to keep growing the government, growing the deficits.  That eventually means we will have a currency crisis, and a sovereign debt crisis, which will lay the foundation for a return to the gold standard.”
...
The sooner we do it the better because the sooner we start to repair the problems the easier it is.  The longer we wait, the bigger the problems get.  But I think it’s happening soon (a return to the gold standard), in a year or two.
Schiff's interview includes more discussion of the Fed's next move and the Republican National Convention.

As Soon As Next Year, America Could Become The World's Leading Energy Producer

Today's big report from Citi validates what energy bulls have been saying for years. America is becoming an energy superpower again, and this could be great for the economy. One particular chart from the report will knock your socks off.
US oil and gas production is projected to pass Saudi Arabia and Russia by the end of 2013.
After that US producers will take a big lead. Canadian and Mexican production is soaring too, which is why Citi calls North America the new Middle East.

Citi is even more bullish than Goldman, which projects US production to pass Saudi Arabia in 2017.

CONFIRMED: It Really Is Halftime In America

Want more proof that Obama's enjoying an economic boom of the same magnitude that Reagan had during his re-election?
That Chicago PMI report? The employment sub-index hit its highest level since 1984.
Here's a table of the readings from the report.
What your looking at is a survey of businesses, where they were asked if they were adding or subtracting jobs. In February, 37% of businesses said they were adding jobs. In January, it was only 19%.

And here's the chart:
