UPDATED: Readers Sent In These Badass Pictures Of Their Trading Desks

trading deskA month or so ago, we asked you about your second home looks like — your trading desk.
We know that you spend hours squinting in front of monitors coming up with ideas and making decisions, so the place has to feel comfortable. It has to give you energy.
It has to be awesome in its own special way.
You guys responded by sending us pictures of your own personal Think Tanks. And sure enough, though they were all different in many ways, there were some pretty cool desks in there.
With this kind of thing, the devil is in the details. Now check out the desks.

MARKETS EXPLODE HIGHER ALL AROUND THE WORLD: Here's What You Need To Know

Sam Ro

 Jun. 29, 2012

exploding planet explosion fire space
Stocks exploded out of the gates and they never looked back.
First the scoreboard:

Dow: 12,880, +277.8, +2.2%

S&P 500: 1,362, +33.1, +2.4%

NASDAQ: 2,935, +85.5, +3.0%

And now the top stories:
  • Late last night at the EU leaders' summit in Brussels, officials announced a new bank recapitalization plan that ignited the global markets.  The new plan would allow existing bailout funds to be used to directly recapitalize the most troubled banks, something that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had resisted staunchly.

  • Basically, this structure is intended to help lower the staggering borrowing costs faced by the Spanish and Italian governments.  Indeed, those borrowing costs plummeted this morning.  "The ECB's balance sheet has been opened up via the ESM to directly recapitalize the European banking system. And that my friends is a game changer!!" wroteJefferies Strategist David Zervos.

  • Despite the hugely favorable response from the stock markets, the new plan has plenty of critics including Morgan Stanley who argues it doesn't go far enough and Bank of New York who pointed out that the plan doesn't do anything for Greece.  Gluskin Sheff economist David Rosenberg noted the lack of details, and he thinks that the markets have set themselves up for disappointment. "We have been here before with initial post-summit euphoric behaviour followed by disappointment once investors realize that these vague policy pronouncements have less meat on the bone than was initially thought," wrote Rosenberg.

  • Amidst all this excitement, oil prices surged 9.4 percent to $84.95.  This was the biggest one day gain in three years.

  • There were a couple of earnings announcements worth noting.  KB Homes announced a Q2 net loss of just $0.31, which was much smaller than what analysts expected.  Net orders jumped 18 percent.  However, CEO Jeffrey Mezger wasn't ready to commit to calling a bottom in housing. Shares jumped by 14 percent.

  • Gunmaker Smith & Wesson also had a monster quarter with sales surging 28 percent. Ever since President Obama was elected, firearms sales have been hot on concerns that he would push through policies that would limit people's ability to get their guns.

10 Things You Need To Know Before The Opening Bell

Miley Cyrus
Jason Merritt/Getty Images
Good morning. Here's what you need to know.
  • Markets in Asia rallied in overnight trade, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng up 2.2 percent. European shares are sharply higher and U.S. futures point to a positive open.
  • European leaders agreed to establish a supervisory body to oversee the continent's banking system. "We affirm that it is imperative to break the vicious circle between banks and sovereigns," leaders wrote in a statement published after 13 hours of talks. Still, here are David Rosenberg's 51 signs the global economy is a disaster.

  • European leaders also renounced seniority on its bailout of Spanish banks, sending borrowing costs lower. Earlier, leaders had planned to subordinate other debt holders, which worried debt markets. The euro surged one percent on the news, to $1.2571, while yields on the Spanish ten-year fell to 6.57 percent.

  • Research in Motion will lay off some 5,000 employees and delay the introduction of its new operating system BB10 as it restructures itself this year. The announcement came as the tech giant reported an adjusted loss per share of $0.37, missing analyst expectations for a loss of $0.07.

  • Credit Suisse unexpectedly announced that it made a profit during the second quarter, including within its investment bank. The firm released the statement as it faces continued pressure following Moody's downgrade.

  • Attorney General Eric Holder was held in Contempt of Congress after failing to hand over documents in the Fast and Furious gun smuggling scandal. The House voted of 255-67, led by Republicans and 17 Democrats. Most Democrats walked out and refused to vote.

  • Personal income and outlays were exactly in line with expectations this morning, with incomes up 0.2 percent while spending was flat. Still to come at 9:45 a.m.: Chicago PMI, with expectations for a slight drop to 52.3 in June. Closing out the day at 9:55 is the final June reading of U. Michigan Consumer Confidence, which last read at 74.1.

EU Leaders Still Haven't Fixed Anything At Their Crucial Summit

Europe Light Pollution

27 European Union leaders are meeting in Brussels today for their latest summit. Investors wait with baited breath to see whether EU leaders will finally take bigger steps towards fiscal union by enacting some burden-sharing measures, or whether they will once again leave troubled banks and countries to the whims of market angst.
The first working group of EU leaders began at 10:15 AM ET, but if this summit is like other important meetings we've seen in the last year, it could extend well into the evening.
While most of the important discussions are taking place behind closed doors, we're covering all the latest rumors out of the summit bellow.

MARKETS MAKE HUGE COMEBACK: Here's What You Need To Know

rock climb

The Dow was down as much as 175 points today.  Then it made an unbelievable comeback after some rumors flew out of Europe.  Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.
First the scoreboard:

Dow: 12,602, -24.7, -0.2%

S&P 500: 1,329, -2.8, -0.2%

NASDAQ: 2,849, -25.8, -0.9%

And now the top stories:
  • Stocks were selling off ahead of the Supreme Court's ruling.  The big laggards were the big banks.  Earlier this morning, The New York Times reported that JP Morgan's initially estimated $2 billion disaster trading loss had actually ballooned to $9 billion.  Politico's Morning Money Ben noted that the timing couldn't have been better for JP Morgan considering the expected announcement on Obamacare.  Nevertheless, JP Morgan led the bank stocks lower.  It didn't help that Citi analyst Keith Horowitz downgraded the entire investment banking sector.

  • Confusion ensued as conflicting headlines crossed about the Supreme Court's ruling.  But the bottom line is that the court voted 5-4 to uphold the most of the Act, "with the exception of a provision regarding the federal government's power to control state Medicaid funds," wrote Business Insider's Grace Wyler.

  • There were winners and losers in the healthcare sector today.  Hospital operators like Tenet Healthcare and diagnostics companies like LabCorp rallied.  The basic idea is that these companies will benefit from increased volume.

  • Losers today included health insurers like Aetna and UnitedHealthcare.  The basic idea is that their costs will likely go up as they make changes for Obamacare and take on risks that they normally would've passed on.

  • Markets staged a huge comeback during the last few minutes of trading.  News crossed that German Chancellor Angela Merkel cancelled an EU Summit press conference.  No one knows exactly what that means.  But the rumor is that Germany may have become more open to the idea of adopting eurobonds as a way of addressing the eurozone debt crisis.

  • Two key pieces of economic data managed to fly under the radar.  Initial jobless claims declined to 386k, which was basically in line with economists expectation of 385k. The final read on Q1 GDP showed 1.9 percent growth, which was also right in line with expectations.

  • BlackBerry maker Research In Motion announces quarterly earnings after the closing bell.  Follow the announcement LIVE on Business Insider.
